Helping pupils understand difference

The free Kindness Crew resource for primary schools in Kent.

The Kindness Crew logoSchools across Kent are being invited to take part in the launch of The Kindness Crew Assembly Challenge, a new initiative designed to help primary school pupils better understand and support classmates who may experience the world differently.

Launching during Neurodiversity Celebration Week, the programme provides schools with an engaging and accessible way to explore kindness, empathy and understanding with pupils.

The Kindness Crew introduces younger primary pupils to a group of characters who help children understand that people experience the world in different ways. Through storytelling, animation and short reflective activities, pupils are encouraged to think about how they can be thoughtful, supportive and curious friends when someone may be finding something difficult. The resource has been designed primarily for Reception to Year 2 pupils, although some schools may also choose to use it with Year 3 and above.

Recognising the pressures schools already face, the initiative was deliberately designed to remove common barriers to participation: it is free for schools and requires no preparation from teachers.

The launch resource is a short 15-minute animated assembly-style session. Schools simply play the video and pause at a few points where children complete short reflection activities together.

Early feedback from pilot schools has been very encouraging:

  • “My children really enjoyed seeing characters that represented them or people they know. It made them feel "seen" in a way that a lot of shows don't. They loved the video!”

Teachers scored it highly for developing emotional intelligence, positive behaviour and was highly aligned with PSHE and RSHE curriculum.

While the launch coincides with Neurodiversity Celebration Week, the resource can be used at any time of the year as part of PSHE, assemblies or classroom discussions.

The aim is not simply awareness. It is about embedding positive behaviour change by helping children develop the everyday behaviours that create more understanding and supportive school environments - an area many schools are increasingly focusing on as part of their work around pupil wellbeing and positive behaviour.

The focus on younger pupils reflects the belief that behaviours such as empathy, kindness and understanding are most effectively developed early in a child’s school journey.

Schools can access the free launch resource from Monday 9 March at the Kindness Crew website or email simon@unseenaware.com for more details.
