Two Kent celebrities are urging schools and families to embrace a scheme that encourages pupils to read more books.
Children's television presenter Phil Gallagher and distinguished historian David Starkey are joining the call for schools to register for Buster's Book Club. The scheme taps into children's competitive spirit to encourage home reading and help them discover a real love of books.
Phil, better known as CBeebies' Mister Maker, said: "Buster's Book Club is a fantastic way to get children excited about reading. I hope lots of schools sign up to the scheme this term so that as many pupils as possible can join in the fun."
He added: "We want more parents and care givers across the county to support children's reading at home throughout 2016."
Next year Buster's Book Club will run a competition to win a storytelling visit by Phil and the winning school will receive its prize in the spring.
Columnist, radio and television presenter David Starkey said: "The KM Charity Team's home reading initiative achieved a remarkable milestone with two million minutes of reading achieved last academic year. The key to the scheme's success is encouraging parents to support their children's reading at home, but supported by interclass and interschool reading challenges."
He added: "I would encourage head teachers to take a serious look at what this initiative has to offer." Schools have until December 17 to join Buster's Book Club and have the scheme in place for the New Year. Orders by the deadline will pay less than half price and as an additional reward each school will receive 30 child entry vouchers to leading visitor attraction Canterbury Tales.
