Why understanding “differences on the inside” matters more than ever
8 May 2026
With Mental Health Awareness Week approaching (week commencing Monday 11 May), schools across Kent will be thinking about how best to support pupil wellbeing and create environments where every child feels understood and included.
The Kindness Crew 4 Schools is a free, not-for-profit primary school initiative designed to help children better understand “differences on the inside” through short, engaging classroom and assembly resources.
One area that can sometimes be overlooked is the impact that “differences on the inside” - including autism, ADHD, hearing loss, anxiety and other hidden conditions - can have on a child’s confidence, sense of belonging and emotional wellbeing.
Children with hidden differences are often more likely to experience emotional wellbeing challenges, particularly when they feel misunderstood, excluded or unable to express their needs. Many children spend years:
- Masking or hiding their differences to fit in
- Struggling to communicate their needs
- Feeling misunderstood or judged by peers
- Experiencing low-level exclusion or social isolation.
Over time, this can affect self-esteem, confidence and emotional wellbeing.
The encouraging news is that early understanding can make a lasting difference.
When children are taught to:
- Ask questions rather than make assumptions
- Show respect for differences
- Be curious and kind towards others
…it helps create a more supportive environment for everyone - not just those with hidden differences.
A simple way for schools to take part this May
Mental Health Awareness Week provides a simple opportunity for schools to start age-appropriate conversations around empathy, belonging and understanding differences on the inside.
To support schools, The Kindness Crew 4 Schools offers a short, ready-to-run assembly activity designed specifically for primary pupils (Year Reception to Year 4), available at no cost to schools.
Since launching in mid-March, over 100 primary schools have signed up across the UK, including more than 20 schools from Kent.
Early feedback from schools has highlighted how quickly pupils engage with the message and reflect on their behaviour towards others. Teachers also reported meaningful discussions around feelings, inclusion and hidden challenges that may not always be visible.
One teacher recently shared:
“The Kindness Crew Assembly was a fantastic introduction to helping pupils recognise and appreciate differences that may not always be visible. It encouraged children to reach out with empathy and include others thoughtfully. The engagement from pupils showed just how meaningful and relatable the experience was.”
Another teacher said:
“I used this in assembly for Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and 2. All were engaged during the video and one child said in a lesson after, ‘I’m part of The Kindness Crew!’”
In just 15 minutes, the Assembly Challenge introduces three simple rules:
- Ask, don’t guess
- Respect is the rule
- Be curious and kind.
The resource requires little to no preparation, is age-appropriate and helps pupils better understand “differences on the inside” in a way that is engaging and memorable.
Why it matters
Supporting emotional wellbeing doesn’t always begin with complex interventions.
Sometimes, it starts with helping children better understand each other. And that small shift can make a meaningful difference to a child’s experience of school, friendships and belonging.
About The Kindness Crew 4 Schools
The Kindness Crew 4 Schools is a not-for-profit CIC set up by Simon Houghton, a deaf social entrepreneur who reflected on his own experiences of growing up feeling different and misunderstood due to hearing loss.
The initiative aims to help children better understand “differences on the inside” and encourage greater kindness, empathy and inclusion in the classroom, playground and beyond.
