Studying Happiness, self-Image, Nutrition and Eating in children (SHINE) study

Researchers from UCL, Durham and Newcastle Universities are asking for expressions of interest from primary schools to support a study to improve our understanding of the health and wellbeing of Reception and Year 6 pupils.

Data shows there are differences in the health and wellbeing of Reception and Year 6 children. This study is helping to explore why this may be.

The study will help us understand whether there is any impact on children from having their height and weight measured as part of the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP). It is part of a bigger study called IMPACT-NCMP that is assessing the National Child Measurement Programme.

We are asking schools to:

  • Mail out to all families of year 6 pupils about the study (a template for this will be provided)
  • Facilitate pupils in year 6 to complete two online surveys in school school time, each lasting 20 to 30 minutes. Pupils will complete one survey on two separate occasions (two to eight weeks apart) between September 2025 and July 2026. (Exact dates for the surveys will be decided between the research team, the school and your local authority.)

The school will receive £150 for these activities.

NHS research clinicians are available to support with survey completion (for free) if this would be useful for your school.

This SHINE study leaflet (PDF, 188.0 KB) provides information to help you choose whether your school wants to participate (in just the year 6 survey aspect of the study). If your school is interested in taking part please follow the QR code in the leaflet.

Please also see this one page SHINE study briefing (PDF, 1000.5 KB) for more information.

If you have any questions about the study please contact z.nas.17@ucl.ac.uk in the study team.
