Invitation to support the ELSA type 1 diabetes screening study

We are inviting schools to support the ELSA research study, led by the University of Birmingham, which aims to screen children and young people aged two to 17 for early risk of type 1 diabetes.

This important study uses a simple finger-prick blood test, delivered in schools by trained NHS staff. Early screening can help identify children at risk and prevent serious illness or emergency hospital admissions.

We are currently planning school-based clinics for the summer term and the next academic year.

What is involved for schools?

  • Agree a suitable date and provide a room for the clinic
  • Share invitation and reminder communications with parents/carers
  • Support pupils attending the clinic on the day.

Parents and carers provide consent directly and can choose either school-based testing or at-home testing.

Funding

Schools will receive £150 reimbursement in recognition of their support with delivering the clinic.
