Walk to school champs will be seeing stars

Schools registering for Active Wow this term have the chance to win storytelling sessions by a celebrated children’s author and a CBeebies TV presenter.

Sign-ups for the fun walk to school scheme Active Wow are being accepted right up until the last day of term at a 20% discount on the usual price. Organisers of the scheme have extended the deadline to encourage schools to have green travel in place for the next academic year, allowing them to take part in a slew of exciting competitions.

Nick ButterworthActive Wow schools will be eligible to join in an interschool green travel challenge in October for the chance to win a story time visit from award-winning author Nick Butterworth. The winning school will get to experience the storytelling magic of the creator of the popular Percy the Park Keeper and Q Pootle 5 series.

Schools will also be encouraged to have as many pupils as possible walking to school for a competition staged in February, where the top prize is a visit from none other than Mister Maker himself, Phil Gallagher. Pupils will no doubt be keen to walk to school on the contest date for the opportunity to meet the CBeebies star in person and hear him tell a story.

The Active Wow scheme requires pupils to walk, cycle or scooter to school at least once a week and preferably on a Wednesday. Pupils living long distances from their school can still join in by using the option to park and stride. Each week, participating schools honour their best class with a Class of the Week trophy, and regular inter-school challenges offer major prizes for having bumper green travel numbers on the set competition dates.

Simon Dolby of the KM Charity Team, which runs Active Wow, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be in a position to offer such exciting rewards to our top schools. I’m happy to reveal there are even more competitions scheduled to take place over the next academic year with fantastic prizes to motivate and reward pupils, so watch this space!”

Schools can use their Primary School Sport Premium grant to fund Active Wow which includes tried and tested incentives for the children and self-evaluation evidence for Ofsted. In addition, the scheme benefits from media coverage via the KM Group’s newspapers, Kent Online website and radio station kmfm. As part of the package, schools will receive two additional schemes:

  • Green Champions, where children take an active role in promoting green travel
  • Road Safety Skill Tests to help children become safer pedestrians.
