NSPCC Child Safety Online Consultation with Young People
5 October 2015
The NSPCC would like to invite Kent Secondary Schools in an online safety evaluation.
Earlier this year the NSPCC launched their online safety campaign Share Aware. The aim of the Share Aware campaign is help parents/carers keep their children safe on social networks, apps and games. It is based on the premises that adults tell children to share but online it is different, in fact sometimes sharing online can be dangerous which is why the NSPCC are asking parents to be Share Aware and keep children safe online. As part of this campaign the NSPCC produced two short animations, for parents/carers to watch with their children to help start conversations about online safety.
As part of the Share Aware campaign the NSPCC developed the Net Aware guide, primarily aimed at parents of 8 to 12 year olds, about the social networks, apps or games with an interactive element that children use the most frequently. As well as working with Mumsnet to find out parents and carers' views we also consulted with over 2,000 children and young people by running online safety sessions with pupils at schools. The guide allows users to search for social networks by name, category and even icon colour.
The next stage for the NSPCC is to conduct a full evaluation of all the social networks on Net Aware and they would like schools across the country to get involved with the process. As children and young people's views are essential in shaping how Net Aware looks, the NSPCC would like to conduct consultations with the pupils at Secondary schools about their views on the social networks they used most. The NSPCC will be producing a Survey Monkey for pupils to populate with information and would like to work with Kent Secondary Schools to asking children and young people to fill this out as part of an online safety session in sessions either lead by teachers or by the NSPCC participation team.
