Letters to the Navy Competition

Schoolchildren invited to enter a competition to visit a royal navy warship in Broadstairs as Part of the Waterloo bicentenary commemorations

In addition to both the national Timeline 200 competition, with judges such as Dan Snow and also the opportunity for schools to participate in the Waterloo Parade on The Mall, London, Hungry for History is delighted to announce a letter writing competition with the Royal Navy as part of the Battle of Waterloo bicentenary commemorations.

As part of schoolchildren's involvement in the New Waterloo Dispatch, The Royal Navy would like to welcome aboard ten schoolchildren on a Royal Navy warship. She will be anchored off the Kent coast at Viking Bay, Broadstairs on Saturday June 20th 2015 during the bicentenary commemorations which will see the ceremonial interpretation of Major Henry Percy of the 14th Dragoon Guards, arriving at Viking Bay two hundred years ago with the captured French eagle standard taken at Waterloo.

After the ceremonies, a PLA pilot boat will transport the ten lucky winners to the ship during the early afternoon of Saturday 20th June where they will spend a couple of hours sampling life when embarked on a Royal Navy Warship.

For a chance to be part of this exciting visit to a Royal Navy frigate, please send a handwritten letter to Commander Nicholas Chatwin OBE, Royal Navy (Navy Regional Command Eastern England) explaining why you would like this opportunity. The ten best letters will then be chosen with the winners receiving a letter of congratulations directly from Commander Nicholas Chatwin along with all necessary information and timings of the visit.

Due to safety controls and procedures, the recommended age to enter this competition is 12 years old. The minimum height of each child must not be less than 1.4m and their minimum weight not less than 40kg.

If you would like to take part, please write to:

Commander Nicholas Chatwin OBE

Good luck!
