CompSci+

What is CompSci+?

An opportunity to build computer science skills for use in the classroom. This initiative is designed to allow professional development at your own pace. Attending training sessions can prove difficult and therefore this programme is bolstered by online resources which provide guidance in how to teach core aspects of the national curriculum. The national curriculum goes beyond coding therefore the materials available investigate topics such as computational thinking, staying safe online and digital literacy. Each module is accompanied with tasks that provide you with the opportunity to practice classroom activities thereby building confidence for your classroom delivery. To further support you, there are face to face sessions with a computer science specialist, online video conference tutorial and advice sessions.

Who is it suitable for?

This programme is suited to all who work in Primary education and especially those who have taken a lead in the development of computer science in schools. Being largely online focused, you will be able to choose when and how you build your expertise and this can be scaffolded in the face to face CPD sessions.

Coaching Development Programme

Middle Leadership (£285)

Programme Overview

This innovative professional development programme has been designed by the London Centre for Leadership in Learning (LCLL) at the UCL and IOE, in partnership with the New Horizons TSA. It is aimed at colleagues who have a coaching role in developing teachers through improving their practice. This may be facilitated by school improvement initiatives such as the STEP programme.

The programme helps participants to build on and further develop their coaching skills. It aims to develop an understanding of how, through coaching, to:

  • support colleagues in improving their practice
  • understand what ‘coaching readiness’ looks like
  • know how change affects people
  • be aware of themselves as emotionally intelligent leaders
  • effectively manage challenging conversations
  • understand what builds and destroys trust
  • and so help to develop a coaching culture within and across the organisation.

Learning Model

Sessions combine bursts of theory with practical activity. In addition, between sessions participants will be asked to apply their new learning and maintain a reflective log or journal.

How coaching can support improvements in practice. Understanding the concept of ‘readiness for coaching.’

  • Coaching to support learning - of adults and students
  • Lesson observations - providing a balance of challenge and support
  • Post lesson conversations that lead to improvements in practice
  • Managing under performance through a coaching approach

Leading change and improvement and building trust.

  • What it means to lead change
  • How moving through change can affect people
  • How do you build trust - and how can you lose it?
  • Exploring the implications for you and your role

Emotionally intelligent leadership and managing challenging conversations and behaviours

  • Why emotional intelligence matters
  • Motivating, developing and managing people through emotionally intelligent leadership

Please visit the NHTSA website to download the programme flyers and to complete the application form.

Designed for teachers who are currently teaching Secondary Mathematics, Secondary Physics, Core Maths or Modern Foreign Language outside of their specialism subject, or who wish to offer teaching in mathematics, physics, core maths or modern foreign language. The programme is also suitable for those returning to teaching.

Eligibility - To be eligible for a place on the programme, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must have QTS but do not have an initial teacher training specialism in the subject you are applying for.
  • You are currently teaching in a maintained secondary school, maintained or non-maintained special school or academy, or you are a qualified teacher, not currently teaching, who wishes to return to teaching.
  • Your school is willing to support your application and provide opportunities to attend all face to face taught sessions.

  • Face-to-face days at the Rochester Grammar School (or partner schools as appropriate), plus an induction day.
  • Online modules to be completed between sessions addressing gaps in knowledge not addressed in the four face-to-face days.
  • Support and activities in schools. This will be bespoke for each participant but could include lesson observations, peer support, action research and joint planning.

All sessions will focus on subject knowledge, pedagogy and effective learning through practical work where appropriate.  The training will focus on current initiatives, such as changes to the new GCSE curriculum and its assessment. The face-to-face sessions are delivered by Specialist Leaders in Education and other experienced practitioners, with significant experience in the classroom, in delivering professional development and with a range of programmes including the IoP Stimulating Physics Network, NCETM and Further Maths Support Programme. Masters level credits are available (delegate’s school to fund) for completion of this course.
