Supporting pupils who are minimally speaking in school

This is a new guidance developed collaboratively by Speech and Language Therapists and specialists across Kent.

It is based on The Balanced System® outcomes for speech, language and communication, and is designed to help schools identify and meet the needs of pupils who use limited or no spoken language. This resource offers practical strategies, tools and training to support staff in planning and delivering inclusive communication support.

Key features include:

  • A clear framework using the means, reasons and opportunities model of communication
  • Guidance on adapting environments, activities and interactions
  • Tools such as communication snapshots and visual supports including communication boards and lanyards
  • Training resources for staff and families
  • Real-life examples and case studies.

This pack is a great starting point for schools, especially where staff may have limited experience supporting minimally speaking pupils. It complements existing resources such as the Mainstream Core Standards and Starting Strong.
