Supporting Newly Arrived Pupils with English as an Additional Language

This training will explore the key challenges facing newly arrived pupils with English as an additional language starting school in the United Kingdom and provide delegates with strategies to overcome these.

Event Summary

The Inclusion Support Service Kent offer direct advice to schools, including centralised and bespoke training, to ensure that the needs of newly arrived pupils with English as an additional language are met. From the initial enquiry to a school from the parents or carers, through the induction process to full integration into class. This training will explore the key challenges facing newly arrived pupils with English as an additional language starting school in the United Kingdom and provide delegates with strategies to overcome these.

Training Objectives

Delegates will:

  • Develop understanding of the roles and responsibilities of staff in developing a whole-school approach to the induction and continuing support of new arrival pupils with English as an additional language
  • Develop an understanding of the challenges facing new arrivals with English as an additional language and how they can be supported in their early days at school
  • Have the opportunity to discuss inclusive teaching strategies that will engage new arrival pupils with English as an additional language in their learning of both the English language and curriculum content.
