Last chance for 20% discount on award winning green travel

23 June 2015

It's the last call for 'early bird' applications to get on board an award winning green travel scheme at a reduced rate.

Primary schools will receive a 20% discount on the KM Walk to School initiatives of Walk on Wednesday (WOW) and Active Bug if they sign up by 1 July 2015. Both schemes encourage children to embrace a healthier lifestyle as well as cut the number of cars on the road, reducing the risks of childhood obesity and traffic congestion and improving safety at the school gate.

Schools can use their Primary School Sport Premium grant to fund the schemes, which promote walking, cycling or scootering to school. There is also a 'park and stride' option for families that live too far away to travel the full distance under their own steam.

The WOW and Active Bug packages include tried and tested incentives for the children, selfevaluation evidence for Ofsted and media coverage via the KM
Group. Schools are being urged to register as soon as possible so they can have green travel in place for the next academic year.

Simon Dolby, from the KM Walk to School Team, emphasised the value on offer to schools. "Each school that registers for WOW or Active Bug will receive two additional schemes at no extra cost. They will also be given access to resources for Green Travel Champions and Road Safety Skill Tests, so that's a total of three initiatives for the price of one."

The Green Travel Champions scheme, which links to Ofsted's Pupil Voice requirements, enlists groups of pupils to take on a variety of exciting tasks, such as creating newsletters, to promote the school's green travel scheme.

Road Safety Skill Tests help children to become safer and more aware pedestrians. They are awarded certificates for successfully passing the engaging online tests at bronze, silver or gold level.

Orders for WOW or Active Bug placed by 1 July 2014 will receive a 20% discount.

Fact-file:

  • 200 primary schools use KM Walk to School resources to promote green travel every week.
  • Last academic year 208,000 school run car journeys were removed from Kent roads by participating schools.
  • KM Walk to School packages include road safety skill tests and provide Ofsted self-evaluation evidence for school management teams.

The KCC supported publication, Developing an Educational Legacy, details how this initiative links to Ofsted booklet.
