Schools launch KM Year of Reading

Scores of literacy leaders attended events in Ashford, Whitstable, Tunbridge Wells and Walderslade to launch the KM Year of Reading campaign.

The drive is a partnership between the KM Group and a leading children’s educational charity to promote a love of reading across the county.

As a result, literacy events and activities run by the KM Charity Team will be given a higher profile in the multimedia company’s print and online offering throughout 2019.

Highlights of the campaign include the Kent Literacy Awards, Buster’s Book Club, the Kent Teacher of the Year Awards and Literacy Stars. The latter scheme empowers young people to take the lead in championing literacy in their schools.

Other features range from creative writing competitions for Primary school children to the Bookbinders initiative, which supports adults and teenagers struggling with reading.

The launch events included training sessions for schools involved in Buster’s Book Club with delegates receiving advice on how to make the most of the reading reward scheme.

Buster’s Book Club motivates pupils to support and encourage each other to achieve their home reading targets. Classes with the best or most improved number of minutes spent reading win prizes such as trophies, tickets to leisure attractions, books or storyteller visits.

Simon Dolby, CEO of the KM Charity Team, said: “We are delighted to team up with the KM Group to celebrate literacy and make a dramatic impact on reading and engagement. I hope schools, businesses and clubs will get on board with the campaign to make 2019 a year of reading for everyone.”
