The Kent Teacher of the Year Awards are looking for literacy leaders who are transforming children’s reading and writing performance.

The annual awards celebrate the expertise and dedication of all school staff and volunteers - but one member of the judging panel in particular holds the literacy category close to their hearts.

Deputy chief executive officer Rebecca Smith, of Social Enterprise Kent, said: “SEK delivers literacy training to adults as part of our suite of training. With good literacy teaching at a Primary and Secondary level, we would do ourselves out of a job - and that is our ultimate aim!”

Mrs Smith is keen to see nominations for individuals and teams promoting reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, as she wants “everyone to have the necessary literacy skills in order to achieve their life goals.”

The awards have separate categories for Primary, Secondary, Further Education, and Newly Qualified Teachers, as well as support staff and unpaid helpers.

Awards coordinator Karen Brinkman, of the KM Charity Team, said: “Good literacy skills are fundamental to children’s confidence and ability to express themselves, as well as their capacity for learning and development in school and in their future careers. I hope school communities won’t hesitate to nominate anyone making a difference to child literacy in their school.”

A panel of judges will select winners for each local authority area as well as overall county champions. The results will be announced at an awards dinner staged at the Ashford International Hotel in May.
