Migrant Help workshops and Samphire Schools of Sanctuary programme
7 November 2024
Earlier this year, the KCC Refugee Resettlement Team conducted consultations with several primary and secondary schools to gather feedback on how best to support resettled refugee children in their school environments across Kent.
These discussions, among others, highlighted the need for improved communication and sharing information about the backgrounds, circumstances, and specific needs including educational needs of refugee children.
In response to this feedback, we are pleased to announce a new partnership with the Migrant Help education team and Samphire charity. This collaboration aims to address some of the needs identified during our consultations by providing your school with additional support, including the opportunity to host informative workshop sessions delivered by Migrant Help. These workshops will offer insights into the challenges faced by refugees and migrants and help to dispel common misconceptions or ‘myth busting’ about migration. These sessions aim to foster understanding, tolerance, and cohesion within your school community.
We would like to invite you to participate in the Schools of Sanctuary programme, which provides accreditation for schools that demonstrate a commitment to supporting children and young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds. This programme not only recognises your efforts to create an inclusive environment but also ensures that migrant children have a positive and supportive learning experience. We encourage you to sign up for both parts of this support programme, which are offered free of charge to participating schools. The Refugee Resettlement Team will cover any costs associated with the Schools of Sanctuary programme and accreditation.
If your school is interested in participating, please contact us directly. We will coordinate with Jonathan Scanlon from Migrant Help and Alex Dean from Samphire, who will then reach out to you to arrange suitable dates and times for the workshops and provide any additional information.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your valuable feedback and continued commitment to supporting refugee children. If we can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
Please feel free to share this email with your EAL and PSHE colleagues, senior management team, or anyone else responsible for coordinating participation in these initiatives.
