Join the Summer Reading Challenge at Kent Libraries
23 June 2025
We are excited to share that Kent Libraries is launching the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge, starting on Saturday 5 July and running until Saturday 6 September.
The Summer Reading Challenge, created by The Reading Agency and delivered in partnership with libraries across the UK, is a free and inclusive initiative designed to keep children reading, engaged, and inspired throughout the summer holidays.
This year’s theme, Story Garden, invites children aged 4 to 11 to explore the magical connection between storytelling and nature.
Children can sign up and take part in the Challenge at any library in Kent or mobile library. They will receive a folder to track their reading and earn milestone incentives. Alternatively, children can sign up and take part in the Challenge online.
Online participants can set their own reading goals, read any books they like, and unlock digital rewards. After completing the Challenge online, children can visit any library in Kent to collect their medal and certificate.
Children participating in the Summer Reading Challenge at any Kent Library will receive incentives to keep them motivated:
- Stickers to decorate their folder.
- A bookmark after reading two books.
- A packet of seeds after reading four books.
- A medal and certificate upon completing the Challenge by reading six books.
The benefits of participating in the Summer Reading Challenge include:
- Boosting reading skills and confidence
- Encouraging a love for reading
- Preventing the summer reading dip
- Fostering creativity and imagination
- Providing family bonding opportunities.
Complete the Challenge for the chance to win an iPad!
Children who complete the Summer Reading Challenge in Kent can be entered into Kent Libraries Summer Reading Challenge prize draw to win one of the following:
- An iPad
- A £25 book token
- One of ten £10 book tokens.
Parents or guardians can choose to opt their child(ren) into the prize draw when informing library staff that the Challenge has been completed.

Kent Libraries will be hosting a vibrant programme of free events and activities throughout the summer. These sessions are designed to engage children and families in creative, educational, and social experiences that complement the Challenge, encouraging children to explore nature, storytelling, and imagination through themed crafts and interactive sessions.
