John Downton Awards and Exhibition 2025

Celebrating 25 years of artistic excellence in Kent.

This year, we are proud to mark the 25th anniversary of the John Downton Awards. Recognising outstanding artistic talent amongst young people in Kent aged 11-to-18 years.

Our annual exhibition encourages and celebrates the diverse talent of a new generation of artists. The winning entries will receive prize money, and a trophy awarded to the best overall school submission.

Established in 2000 at the request of Miss Hilda Downton - sister of the renowned Kentish artist, poet and philosopher John Downton (born in Erith in 1906) - this prestigious award continues to spotlight the creativity and skill of Kent’s young artists in painting, drawing mixed media and photography.

Submissions are now open and an application form can be requested by emailing JohnDowntonAward@kent.gov.uk. Further information can be found on the John Downton Awards website

Winners will be selected in several categories according to age and media. The shortlisted artwork will be displayed at the County Gallery, County Hall, Maidstone from Monday 26 January 2026. The celebration will culminate in a special awards ceremony on Wednesday 11 February 2026.

Be part of this year’s John Downton Awards Exhibition and help showcase the diverse talent of young artists in Kent.
