Headstart Kent - helping young people bounce back
31 August 2016
Headstart Kent is a project within Early Help and Preventative Services which aims to help young people cope better when faced with difficult circumstances in their lives, preventing them from experiencing common mental health problems.
Funded by the Big Lottery Fund, the project has been successfully trialled in Kent over the last two years and has just received an additional £10m to deliver a third phase over the next five years.
KCC is one of only six authorities to receive this additional funding, which recognises the success of the project so far.
The new funding will enable us to provide an approach that supports young people to develop their own resilience to cope with the everyday pressures they may face throughout their lives, as well as how to help each other. The project aims to make changes through schools, families and within communities and has been designed with young people at its heart.
This project directly delivers towards KCC’s strategic outcome ‘Children and young people in Kent get the best start in life’ , in particular by:
- creating resilient and strong communities to raise young people
- children and young people have better physical and mental health.
The new phase will start in Swale and Gravesham and, over the next five years, Headstart will deliver its new project within groupings across nine districts. Find out more about Headstart Kent in this short video
