Fraud alert: cold callers

The Counter Fraud team has received information that a school has been targeted by cold callers.

In the initial instance the cold caller is purporting to be from a power company, insisting that they are given access to the school because their electricity meter needs to be changed. When informed they could not have immediate access the caller became aggressive and pushy.

The same school has also been targeted by a colder caller purporting to be a local trader who was offering to paint the lines on the road outside the school.

It is advised that schools remain vigilant when taking calls and that they follow correct procedure when working with contractors, ensuring that their identity is verified and that they are a trusted source.

If you suspect that a member of staff at school has fallen victim to fraud please report to internal.audit@kent.gov.uk or phone 03000 41 45 00.
