Improved confidence is just one of the benefits to pupils who take part in the annual KM Kent Cooks competition, which is now open for entry.
KM Kent Cooks is the county's official school cooking competition and helps pupils to develop a greater understanding of healthier food options, locally grown Kentish produce, and cooking to a budget.
To enter, youngsters aged between six and 19 years prepare a dish they have created and every entrant has their recipe turned into an online recipe page on the www.kentcooks.co.uk website.
Finalists are invited to attend a Masterchef-style event on November 26 to cook their menu for a panel of food industry experts. The judges will reward the best Kent Cook in the Primary, Secondary and Family categories with a goody bag, certificate and a share of £500.
Competition finalists often enjoy a great sense of achievement and a keener interest in cooking and healthy eating. Pupils' newfound confidence and enhanced skills in food preparation and hygiene are also noticed by their parents and teachers.
Lisa Craig from Kent Cooks said: "Whole families can join in the fun – primary schoolchildren, their siblings in secondary school and parent and child teams.
"GCSE catering and food tech students have to cook two dishes for their coursework and so our Secondary School category matches this. These students can enter our competition with the dishes they plan to cook for their exam."
For more information, including to request leaflets or to submit an entry, visit Kent Cooks Website. The deadline for entries is midnight on Tuesday, November 3. The KCC supported publication, Developing an Educational Legacy, for details how this initiative links to Ofsted view booklet.
