Bumper crop of fun with Buster’s Book Club

Competition prizes revealed for schools taking part in successful home reading scheme in 2019 including chance to win 400 books.

There are just two weeks left for schools to register for Buster’s Book Club for 2019 and automatically be entered into a prize draw to scoop hundreds of books for the school library.

The deadline to join is Saturday 1 December and the organisers of the reading reward scheme, the KM Charity Team, have revealed a selection of the competition prizes up for grabs next year.

Participating schools will be in with the chance to win tickets to Wildwood animal park, Diggerland construction theme park, and ‘the loveliest castle in the world’ Leeds Castle.

Star storytellers visiting winning schools will include CBeebies favourites Phil ‘Mister Maker’ Gallagher and Joanna Adeyinka-Burford of The Let’s Go Club, as well as Anthony Cooper - author of The Curious Tale of the Dodo.

Phil Gallagher, a.k.a. CBeebies' Mister Maker, is one of the celebrity storytellers who will visit one lucky school next year.

More competitions and storyteller prizes will be announced in the coming months.

Buster’s Book Club encourages pupils to spend more time reading for pleasure at home and engages parents in their children’s reading. Each child is given a home reading target of a set number of minutes and then whole classes take part in a series of challenges throughout the year.

Pupils encourage fellow classmates to meet their targets - or feel compelled to make an extra effort with their reading - in order to win the Reading Class of the Week Trophy within their schools.

Tickets to leading leisure attractions are awarded to classes top or most improved for reading in competitions involving all participating schools in their district.

The scheme culminates in an annual record attempt - and the figure for schools to collectively beat next year is eight and a half million minutes of reading.

Kathy Beel, literacy co-ordinator at the KM Charity Team, said: “Schools have found Buster’s Book Club instrumental in spreading the love of reading. It involves families in getting the reading habit and generates a real buzz in the classroom as the children proudly share their reading minutes - not to mention the anticipation and excitement in finding out who has won the trophy that week!”

She added: “Even better, all this activity prompts discussions among the pupils and with their teachers - and with mum and dad at home - about the books they are reading. We are thrilled every time we hear from schools seeing progress in child literacy thanks to Buster’s.”

Register by 1 December at Buster's Book Club website to have the home reading scheme in place for the New Year - and enjoy a year of fun competitions getting pupils excited about books!
