Young People's mental health - how libraries can help
5 December 2016
Shelf Help is a new library scheme to help young people manage their mental health, wellbeing and resilience, using recommended reading.
Shelf Help is a national scheme to support young people’s mental health, delivered by the Reading Agency in partnership with the Society of Chief Librarians as part of the Reading Well Books on Prescription series.
Young people and health experts chose 35 books for this collection. The books contain information and advice as well as personal stories about dealing with feelings such as anxiety, depression or stress, or experiences such as bullying. Topics covered also include self-harm, OCD and eating disorders.
These books help by offering tips and ideas to help young people understand and manage their emotions as well as cope with difficult situations. There are also personal stories, graphic novels and fiction. Some of the titles are also available as e-books so that young people can borrow books anonymously if they prefer.
The books are listed in the Shelf Help leaflet (PDF, 219.6 KB) which also signposts young people to further support if needed. There is also a leaflet giving further information about the scheme for health professionals and those working closely with young people.
Shelf Help collections are available in 34 libraries across Kent. The books can also be ordered in any Kent library free of charge, and borrowed from whichever library works best for the young person.
Visit the Reading Well website for the list of books, resources and FAQs.
