Leading inclusion: strategies to improve focus and attention
Primary leadership session on improving pupil focus and executive function, with practical strategies, SEND insights, and expert input from Dr Sam Wass.
Designed for primary headteachers, senior leaders and SEND/inclusion leads, this session focuses on developing effective, evidence-informed approaches to improve children’s focus, attention and executive functioning across Key Stages 1 and 2. Set against the evolving SEND and inclusion landscape, it offers practical strategies to support all learners in accessing and engaging with learning.
Delivered by Dr Sam Wass, Director of the Institute for the Science of Early Years at the University of East London, delegates will explore how attention works and how schools can positively influence children’s concentration and learning behaviours. Drawing on the latest research in early brain development, this session combines theory with practical, classroom-ready approaches to strengthen inclusive practice.
The session also provides opportunities to hear from schools that have recently undergone the new inspection process, alongside dedicated time for professional networking and collaboration.
Topics to be covered include:
- understanding the core components of executive function and their impact on learning
- practical, evidence-based strategies to improve focus and attention
- applying early years brain development research across the primary phase
- supporting inclusive practice in line with current SEND reforms
- learning from recent inspection experiences and effective school approaches.
