Celebrating diversity

Black History Month

Black History Month has been celebrated across the UK every October for over 30 years. It is a time when schools can highlight and celebrate the achievements of the black community and uncover hidden history about their communities. It is also an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the positive contribution of black people to British Society.

These websites offer information and resources on black history:

  •  Chalkface

Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month

The aims of the Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month are:

  • to explain the history and culture of the communities
  • to challenge myths and break down barriers
  • to celebrate the richness that these communities bring to our everyday lives

These websites offer information and resources:

  • Irish Traveller
  • National Magazine for Gypsies and Travellers

Islam Awareness Week

Islam Awareness Week (IAW) is an opportunity to promote awareness of Islam across Britain in order to remove prejudices that promote Islamophobia. It is a unique opportunity involving everyone throughout the country, irrespective of their faith, school of thought or group affiliation.

During Islam Awareness Week, communities throughout the country will be organising a range of activities and events aimed at opening dialogues about their way of life, developing contact with individuals and institutions, promoting social interaction and celebrating art and culture.

Further information can be found on the Islamic Awareness Week website.

Refugee Week

Refugee Week is a UK-wide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and encourages a better understanding between communities.

Every year, hundreds of events are organised across the UK. The last Refugee Week was the 17th - 23rd June 2013 and you can view more information about the event by visiting the Refugee Week page.

Holocaust Memorial Day

Holocaust Memorial Day is about commemorating all of the communities who suffered as a result of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution, and demonstrating that the Holocaust is relevant to everyone in the UK today. The day provides a focus for people to think about the continuing consequences of the Holocaust and more recent genocides on our society.

When is Holocaust Memorial Day?

Holocaust Memorial Day is on 27th January. This date was chosen as it is the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and extermination camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.
