A message from Matt Dunkley CBE:

5 July 2019 weekly update

5 July 2019

This week, Matt introduces the research evidence underpinning Ofsted’s proposed education inspection framework.

Dear Colleagues

I have been attending the ADCS National Conference in Manchester this week. The programme was well balanced and tackled several of the major issues facing us in Children’s Services. Yesterday, Nadhim Zahawi was the keynote speaker and afterwards, I was part of a private meeting with Nadhim and some DCS colleagues where we discussed in more detail the significant and challenging SEND funding issues - it is clear that there is much to be done.

Also this week, Ofsted released the research evidence underpinning Ofsted’s proposed education inspection framework. The review draws on a range of sources, including both Ofsted’s own research programme and a review of existing evidence bases. The review is structured to provide the evidence base that underlies each of the four key judgements for the proposed new framework:

  • quality of education
  • personal development
  • behaviour and attitudes
  • leadership and management.

Finally a reminder that my three Headteacher Briefings are taking place next and we have been lucky enough to secure the Education Endowment Foundation, presenting data about Kent schools and sharing ideas for a joint education project in Kent. There is still time to book a place.

The dates for the briefings are as follows:

  • Monday 8 July - 9am for a 9:30am start to 12pm - Ashford International Hotel, Simone Weil Avenue, Ashford, Kent TN24 8UX
  • Monday 8 July - 1:30pm for 2pm start to 4:30pm - The Spitfire Ground (Canterbury Cricket Ground), St Lawrence, Old Dover Road, Canterbury, Kent CT1 3NZ
  • Tuesday 9 July - 1pm for 1:30pm start to 4pm - Mercure Maidstone Great Danes Hotel, Ashford Road, Maidstone, Kent ME17 1RE
