'Road Sense - Still a distraction'

Session overview

New free Road Safety ‘Road Sense - Still a distraction’ session is for Year 7. This is an interactive session with a supporting video which include actors of secondary school age. The session covers students’ safety when traveling around the roads, this includes distractions like mobile phones and groups of friends.

This session discusses risks, distractions, causes and increases knowledge and understanding on how important it is to use all our senses to be safer around roads. The objectives of the session are set out below and support the student’s safety awareness when traveling around the roads, now they are becoming more independent. We do not use scare tactics only a positive and reinforcement of student’s common sense.

Session length

40 to 45 minutes - The times do not include time for teaching staff to register students, etc. so please allow additional time.

PSHE links

  • Simple strategies to help build resilience to negative opinions, judgements and comments.
  • To recognise and manage internal and external influences on decisions which affect health and wellbeing.
  • How to identify and articulate a range of emotions accurately and sensitively, using appropriate vocabulary.
  • To further develop the skills of active listening, clear communication, negotiation and compromise.
  • The role peers can play in supporting one another to resist pressure and influence, challenge harmful   social norms and access appropriate support.
  • That the need for peer approval can generate feelings of pressure and lead to increased risk-taking;   strategies to manage this.

Objectives

  • To identify risks and distractions on the journey to and from school - when crossing roads, or using busy pavements, certain behaviours can affect our focus and therefore safety.
  • To understand the impact distraction may have on the journey to and from school - phone, earbuds, friends etc.
  • To increase knowledge and understanding of the safer aspects of the journey to school - safer place to cross, taking distractions away, resilience peers and positive behaviours (looking after friends).
  • To understand when crashes occur, the causation factors and impact on community (both immediate and wider).

Pre and post survey

For this session to be completely free of charge to your school, your students must complete an online pre-survey and post-survey. Every school will need to select just two form groups or classes to take the pre-survey before the session, (it is a quick tick box questionnaire) then the same group of students will need to complete the post-survey after the session. The link will be sent out to your school and must be completed a week before the Road Safety Officer is due. Once both surveys have been completed, the session will become completely free to your school.

New free Road Safety - Road Sense ‘Good decisions' session is for Year 9. This is an interactive session with supporting videos and a KCC Road Safety Officer. The session covers students’ safety when traveling around the roads, this includes distractions, hazard perception, mobile phones and groups of friends.

This session discusses risk-taking, distractions, hazard perception, causes and increases knowledge and understanding on how important it is to use all our senses to be safer around roads. The objectives of the session are set out below and support the student’s safety awareness when traveling around and crossing the roads. We do not use scare tactics only a positive and reinforcement of student’s common sense.

  • To be able to understand and identify hazards when traveling around roads.
  • To understand how mobile phone, earbud, friends, impulse control etc. can cause distraction when traveling across the road.
  • To be able to implement safer strategies when travelling across road.
