One week left to enter Green School Awards

Primary and Secondary schools can nominate any project - from litter picking to a kitchen garden - to win a prize and inspire students to go green.

Organisers of the Green School Awards 2019 are urging schools to share details of their good work teaching students the importance of taking care of the environment.

But they must hurry; the deadline to enter is Friday 7 December.

“We want to hear about all activities - whether it’s paper recycling in the classroom, litter picking in the grounds; or growing fruit and vegetables in the school allotment,” said Karen Brinkman, event organiser for the KM Charity Team, which runs the awards each year.

“Perhaps you have run a green awareness day, or competitions or quizzes with a green theme? There are so many different ways in which schools are encouraging students to consider their impact on the environment and live a greener lifestyle. Please help us to highlight all the work going on in your school - it’s a big thank you to everyone involved and a wonderful way to show other schools that they can do it too.”

She added: “It’s so easy to place a nomination - just fill in the simple online form.”

The Green School Awards have six categories:

  • Green travel and road safety
  • Energy conservation
  • Nature conservation
  • Health and well-being
  • Recycling
  • Air pollution.

Anyone associated with a school including teachers, support staff, volunteers and parents can nominate a green activity being carried out in school or the wider community.

To encourage participation, each person placing a nomination by the 7 December deadline will go into a prize draw to win one of three family tickets to indoor theme park KidZania London.

Award winners will be announced at a celebration event in February staged at the Ashford International Hotel.

Details of the winning initiatives will be published in a best practice document and shared with schools across the South East to inspire others to follow their lead.
