Finance - Free School Meals Supplementary Grant

Free School Meals Supplementary Grant information for 2018-19 and 2019-20.

Due to the roll-out of Universal Credit, the Department for Education (DfE) have introduced an income-based threshold for Free School Meal (FSM) eligibility.

As a result of this change to the benefit system and free school meal eligibility, the number of pupils eligible for free school meals will increase. In order to recognise the in-year growth in free school meal numbers the Education Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) are introducing a new grant from 2018-19.

Calculation of allocations in 2018-19 and 2019-20

The allocations will be determined by the difference between the number of pupils eligible for free school meals in a school as recorded in the October censuses as follows:

Financial Year 2018-19

What will be measured:School-level FSM eligibility increase between October 2018 and October 2017 census
What schools will receive:Measured increase in FSM eligibility x £440
Financial Year 2019-20

What will be measured:School-level FSM eligibility increase between October 2019 and October 2018 census
What schools will receive:Measured increase in FSM eligibility x £440

This payment will be allocated in February 2019 via the statement of accounts and should be coded to CFR code I18: additional grant for schools.
