DSL training

Whole day training

This one day course is for senior school leadership staff who have responsibility for safeguarding children in their school/workplace.

By the end of the course the members will know their responsibilities as the Designated Safeguarding Lead:

  • training and Induction of staff
  • raising awareness of child protection/safeguarding issues within school/workplace
  • multi-agency systems and processes for working together with other agencies including Children's Social Services, health, police, probation.

The course will cover:

  • creating a safe culture for staff and children
  • training and induction of staff
  • national legislation
  • national and local policy and procedures (including Prevent, FGM and CSE)
  • assessing need and risk and levels of intervention
  • contributing to local multi-agency processes and systems.

Course requirements

All applicants should be members of the school's senior management team.

All applicants should have completed a basic awareness course prior to attending. This training may have been provided in the past by the Children's Safeguards service but more recently by the school's Designated Child Protection Co-ordinator. Applicants will be expected to have prior knowledge of:

  • Signs and symptoms of child abuse
  • Categories and definitions of child abuse under Working Together to Safeguard Children;
  • The Department of Health Framework for Assessment ("the triangle");
  • Recording and reporting systems in their workplace or school.

There will be a charge for this course.
