Pupils can walk to win story time with a star

Schools signing up for Super Wow (Walk on Wednesday) will have the chance to win prizes including a storyteller visit from rugby legend Catherine Spencer.

A former England women’s rugby team captain is swapping box-kicks for books to give a story time to walk to school winners next term.

Catherine Spencer, who led the team to three successive Six Nations titles, is Honorary Patron of the KM Charity Team and a key supporter of its work promoting healthy lifestyles. She is encouraging schools to join Super Wow this term and ensure the walk to school scheme is in place for September.

Super Wow schools will be eligible to join in inter-school challenges staged next academic year, with the best or most improved classes winning a storytime with a star. Catherine has agreed to be one of the celebrity storytellers - and more names will be revealed in the coming weeks.

The 38-year-old, who is also the founder of the Inspiring Women speaker agency, recently read a tale to walk to school challenge winners at St Katherine’s School in Snodland. The children chose The Highway Rat, a tale of a rodent robber who gets his comeuppance from a crafty duck, by Gruffalo author Julia Donaldson. Catherine also showed the youngsters the medals she was awarded during her England career.

Sarah Clyne, walk to school project officer for the KM Charity Team, said: “Catherine’s a fantastic role model for both girls and boys because she has taken gender stereotypes and kicked them well and truly into touch. She shows that you can do anything you want to do if you put your mind to it.”

Super Wow encourages families to walk to school with classes competing each week to be awarded the Green Class of the Week Trophy. Monthly inter-school challenges award winning classes tickets to leisure attractions or storyteller visits.

Schools have until July 1 to join Super Wow at a 20% discount for next academic year. They will also go into a prize draw to win 400 books for the school library. Visit the KM Walk on Wednesday website

Primary schools’ Sport Premium grant can be used to fund Super Wow, which uses a variety of incentives to promote walking, cycling, or scooting to school, and provides self-evaluation evidence for Ofsted.
