Ofsted Inspectors recommend Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Pupils are a focus for inspections

On 10 October 2017 the Race Disparity Audit was published.

The report on Education, skills and training highlighted that nationally Gypsy, Roma and Traveller pupils are the lowest achieving group across all Key Stages, with the highest percentage of absences and exclusions. This is replicated across Kent, and although Kent GRT pupils in the EYFS and KS2 are outperforming their national peers and Kent KS4 pupils’ results are in line with national GRT figures there is still a great deal of work to be done to accelerate the progress of these vulnerable learners.

Ofsted are now acting upon this. In the latest School inspection update, issue 13 the recommendation is that “Inspectors should always be mindful of provision and outcomes for GRT pupils during inspections. They should focus in greater depth when these groups represent a significant number in a school.” Kent is likely to be one of the top 12 focus areas.

In response to the Ofsted School inspection update The Inclusion Support Service Kent (ISSK) are holding a network and discussion afternoon to support schools to improve outcomes for GRT pupils.
