Kent Cooks’ sizzling summer launch

Judges of the county’s official cookery contest for schools got hot under the collar for the Kent Cooks summer launch.

Seven members of the Kent Cooks judging panel had a taste of what’s in store for youngsters taking part in the
annual Masterchef-style competition, which is now open for entry.

Those cooking up a storm at Chequers Kitchen Cookery School included Leah McDonald of Three R’s Teacher Recruitment; Jack Harland and Jane Barlow of Benenden Hospital Trust; David Hoeseason of Best Western Abbots Barton Hotel; Darren Tutt from FFK Catering; Deborah Sparkes of Suzanne Howe Communications; Sarah Jane Leipnik of Golding Homes; and Laura Anthony and JuliaHallett of Whole School Meals.

The contest invites budding young chefs aged from 6 to 19 years to showcase their menus and compete for the Kent Cooks crown and top prizes including a share of £500.

To enter, youngsters are required to prepare meals to a fixed budget, take a photograph of their culinary masterpiece, and upload the image to the Kent Cooks website along with a description of cooking method. All entries will be published on the website as online recipe cards.

Categories include Primary School, Secondary School, and Families for adult-and-child entrants with the accompanying adult being a parent, guardian, Special Educational Needs coordinator (SENco), or Family Liaison Officer (FLO).

Maxine Tarquini from Kent Cooks said: “We’re expecting a range of abilities but we’re looking for entries that show creativity and an awareness of healthy options and locally sourced ingredients.”

Teachers or guardians can help entrants to complete the simple online entry form before the competition deadline of November 7. This year, entries received before September 1 will go into a prize draw to win a pair of Eurostar tickets.

The best entries will be invited to make their dish for a VIP judging panel at the live competition final staged at East Kent College in November.
